The yarn I used in this demonstration is Lion Brand Yarn Hometown USA in Aspen Tweed. Place the tying strand between the middle and ring finger. Place the tying strand between the pointer and middle fingers.įor a large, use your pointer, middle, ring and pinky fingers. Place the tying strand between these two fingers.įor a medium, use your pointer, middle and ring fingers. My medium sized pom pom would be approximately a 2″ ball.įor a small pompom, use only two fingers: your pointer and middle fingers. To know what size your pompom will be, measure your fingers like in the photo below. I won’t give the final measurements since it really depends on the size of your hand. (I used this pom on my Aspen Tweed Hat crochet pattern that is available at the link.) You will follow the same directions shown in the photos for all sizes, but you adjust the number of fingers wrapped with yarn to create the different sizes.

This post may contain affiliate links for products I use and recommend. This photo tutorial demonstrates how to make a pompom using only your fingers and a pair of scissors. I’ve seen people use toilet paper rolls, cardboard cutouts and forks, all of which usually produce great results.

  • Now give the pom pom a trim so it doesn't look so scraggly.There are many tools that you can make or buy that help you create a pompom, but they aren’t always necessary.
  • As you are doing this, be sure to keep your long pieces out of the way if you want to use them to hang the pom pom with. Slide your scissors into the loops and cut.
  • Pull the yarn tight and finish off the knot, making sure it is secure.
  • Carefully slide the yarn off of your fingers.
  • (After making a few of these, I found that tying the knot on the palm side of my hand was easier.)
  • Wrap the yarn through the tips of the fingers and tie the beginning of a knot.
  • You now have a piece of yarn on one side of the pom pom.
  • Pull the yarn through the other side of your fingers.
  • Insert the end of the yarn between your fingers. You don't need to measure, just make sure it's long enough to tie around the yarn and have some excess.
  • Cut the yarn and then cut a piece that is about 12 inches long.
  • Oh, and try not to wrap it too tight or you'll cut off the circulation in your fingers! The more you wrap, the fuller the pom pom will be. Depending on the size you want, use two, three or four fingers.
  • Place the end of the yarn on your fingers.
  • Step 10: Now just give it a trim so it doesn't look so scraggly. Step 9: This is what it should look like at this point. You will want these long pieces to hang the pom pom with. As you are doing this, be sure to keep your long pieces out of the way. Step 7: Pull the the yarn tight and finish off the knot, making sure it is secure. Step 6: Carefully slide the yarn off of your fingers.
